Welcome to the HOS Website
The Hampshire Ornithological Society records and publishes information about wild birds in the county of Hampshire, England.

This web site is for members and potential members of HOS. Hopefully, visitors to Hampshire will also find it useful.

The Links page includes sites created and maintained by HOS members with site guides, lists and up-to-date sightings. The Hoslist mailing list often has sightings posted to it within hours.

Breeding Bird Survey 2010

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the main scheme for monitoring population changes of common and widespread birds.  The results are fundamental to bird conservation, and are used by Government and non-governmental organisations to set conservation priorities.

Last year, Hampshire BBS volunteers surveyed over 100 randomly-selected 1-km squares.  In 2010, it will be absolutely vital that we get really good coverage so that we can assess the impact of this winter’s weather.  But we do need more BBS observers please!

At the moment, there are two squares where I especially need volunteers:

SU1802 – Kingston Gt Common, SU4007 – Applemore.

If you live not too far from one of these squares, please consider taking on a BBS this year.  Or if you already do a BBS, then maybe you’d like to do another one in a different habitat?

The methodology is very simple, and requires just two visits during the breeding season, recording all the birds observed along a set route. For more information,  see http://www.bto.org/bbs/index.htm

Please let me know if you can help, I hope to hear from many of you.
