Other Publications

HOS' principal publication is the Annual Bird Report. This documents the birdlife of Hampshire for a calendar year and includes a systematic list, a ringing report, a surveys report and a number of specially commissioned articles. The Report includes colour photographs of birds and places in the County. Submissions are accepted on condition that they may be reproduced in any HOS publication without fee. They should be sent to the Editor.

Birds of Hampshire

The most recent county avifauna, Birds of Hampshire, Clark and Eyre, 1993, 512 pp. A comprehensive guide to the county's birds. It contains chapters on geology, history of land use, development of ornithology, the birdwatching year, 348 species accounts and the results of the Tetrad Atlas Survey carried out in 1986-1991. 

 

The Birds of Hampshire Checklist. An A6 size booklet which can be used to keep track of the birds you've seen in the county but, more importantly, gives information on the status of all Hampshire birds (up to the end of 2000) - the best time of the year to see them, first and last dates for migrants, the best months for rarities, etc. Price £1.50 (including post and packing). Available from the Sales Officer (details above). An updated version is in preparation and will be available shortly.

Clothing

An embroidered kingfisher in 5 colours on a FRENCH NAVY or DARK GREEN sweatshirt. The bird is based on the HOS logo by David Thelwell and is surrounded by pale blue lettering on the Navy sweatshirt and white lettering on the dark green. Content 50% cotton, 50% polyester. Sizes are M, L, X, XXL (44", 47", 50", 52" around garment, L is 38" chest for men). Price £16 for M, L and XI. £17 for XXL. Post and packing £1.75 for one, £2.50 for two. Library

The HOS Library is housed in the Special Collections Section of the Hartley Library at Southampton University. It comprises approximately a hundred books (including Birds of Hampshire and the IoW by Cohen), various bird reports (including all of the Hampshire Reports) and some back copies of Ibis and British Birds. Much of the Hartley Library catalogue is online. Admission to the Hartley Library is free to everyone, the advantage of being an HOS member is that you can obtain a Reader's ticket, allowing you to borrow books, free! The normal charge is £10.
