Grey Roosevelt walk - June
2010
The following photos were taken by Ian Julian
during the Grey/Roosevelt centenary walks. This was organised by HOS to
commemorate the walk taken by Sir Edward Grey (British Foreign Secretary)
and Theodore Roosevelt (former President of the USA) on June 9th 1910. The
two of them walked alone, without any security or the media, along the banks
of the River Itchen and then in the New Forest, 12 miles in all.
The Autumn Edition 2010 of the Kingfisher
newsletter has articles on the original walk and its re-creation 100 years
later. The walk in June 2010 involved descendents of Grey and Roosevelt,
including the 2 great-grandsons of the President, plus the leaders and
representatives of local and national conservation bodies, including the
RSPB, English Nature, BTO and many others.
It was the largest event ever organised by HOS,
4 walks in all, and thankfully, all went without a hitch, the weather was
kind, the birds showed themselves, the scenery showed Hampshire at its best. |
