Stonechats

A moderately common but local resident and partial migrant, the Stonechat's preferred habitat is lowland heath with scattered clumps of gorse. The main population centre in Hampshire is the New Forest.

This picture of a male was taken in the New Forest in 2001 by Mike Jones using a Nikon Coolpix 990/Leica APO 77 scope combination. Stonechat

Kevin Sayer and Andy Welch are operating a Retrapping Adults for Survival (RAS) scheme in the New Forest involving colour ringing all the stonechats in the Black Gutter Bottom and Beaulieu Road areas. In 2001 they ringed over 100 stonechats. The stonechats have three colour rings and a BTO metal ring. Sightings of these birds should be sent to Andy Welch, 15 Wiltshire Road, Chandler's Ford, Eastleigh SO53 3FB or telephoned to 02380 900520 or emailed. Details required are date, six figure OS reference and the rings on each leg.

This is one of "their" birds in the hand, taken with a Coolpix Stonechat
