Where to Watch Birds in Hampshire

There are four useful books on this subject and several excellent Internet resources (not counting this one!)

  • Where to watch birds in Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Bromley, Kent: Christopher Helm, 1989. 302p. illus. maps. ISBN 0 7470 1208 3.

  • Birds of the New Forest, Alan Michael Snook, Fordingbridge, £12.50.

  • Birds of Hampshire, Clark and Eyre, HOS, 1993. £22.50.

  • Hantsweb - search for "nature reserve" and you will find some excellent pages describing places like Titchfield Haven, Martin Down and Keyhaven Marshes.

  • Wildlife & Wild places, A guide to wildlife reserves managed by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust

  • Will Walmsley's Where to Watch Birds in South Hampshire website includes site guides

The first covers the well known sites, the second describes six sites in the New Forest in great detail and the third is the most comprehensive and up to date county avifauna.

The Recording section of this website includes a Gazetteer, the OS references are hyperlinks to maps of the areas.

The sites listed below were the subjects of a series in the Kingfisher, the HOS Newsletter, beginning in Winter 1993. Not all the authors have been approached for permission to reproduce their work here, if you are one such please contact the Webmaster.
