Ringed Plover &
Little Ringed Plover Survey
In the breeding season
of 2007, there will be a full national survey of Ringed Plovers and
Little Ringed Plovers. This will be the first survey of these species
since 1984.
The purpose of the
survey is to update the population estimates for these species, but also
and perhaps more importantly, to assess how the species have fared in
different areas and habitats. In Hampshire, our coastal-breeding
Ringed Plovers may have been affected by increased recreational
disturbance, and are now particularly vulnerable to the coastal squeeze
arising from the combined effects of developments pressures and
sea-level rise. So it will be very important to obtain some good data
for this species.
The survey will
involve coverage of a large number of sites, including key sites
identified from the 1984 survey. The field methods will be similar to
those of previous surveys and will involve three site visits between
April and July 2007 to count adults present and estimate the number of
breeding pairs.
We will particularly
need all the help possible along the coast, and if you would be willing
to help with this survey….
