The populations of some river and waterways species (for example
Kingfisher, Goosander, Dipper, Common Sandpiper, Little Grebe, Sand
Martin, Grey Wagtail, Mute Swan and Reed Warbler) are not well
monitored by other surveys, and the Waterways Bird Survey attempts to
do this. The survey is relatively intensive, and requires nine visits
to the same fixed stretch of river each year, between March and July.
Each visit usually takes about two hours and all the waterside birds
either seen or heard need to be identified and recorded on a map.
Additional survey stretches would be very welcome in Hampshire. For
more information and to discuss how you might participate in this
survey, in the first instance …
