A full national survey was undertaken in 2006,
repeating the survey last done in 1997. This was an important
survey for Hampshire, which has a significant population of
Woodlarks. The survey involved at least two visits to every 1-km
square where there have been Woodlarks in recent years, plus visits to
some additional, randomly-chosen, squares in farmland habitats.
Preliminary results appeared to show that Woodlarks were doing much
better in Hampshire farmland than previously, but that total numbers
were perhaps down a little. Unfortunately, cold weather in
February-April of 2006 may have meant that some birds were missed. A
full report on the Hampshire population will appear in the 2006
Hampshire Bird Report.
