Walk Categories

 

A) Easy - a fairly short walk over relatively flat ground with no/few stiles.
B) A little more demanding - longer distance and/or gentle hills but with no/few stiles.
C) Medium difficulty - moderate distance and/or moderate hills and/or a moderate number of stiles.
D) Strenuous - long distance and/or steep hills and/or many stiles.

 

A few of the following walks are joint with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and a collection will be made for donations towards the Trust

Saturday 7th January – Ashley Warren and the Red Kite Roost

Leader:  Keith Betton                    2.30pm until 5pm (3 miles)
The meeting point is SU492565 – where the public footpath heads west from the road that passes through Ashley Warren.  One mile North of Ashley Warren Farm.  There is limited roadside parking for a few cars here and also 300m south a few more spaces.

Sunday 8th January - Old Winchester Hill

Possible Species - Raptors - Redwings and Fieldfares

Leader:  Nick Wiley                    10.30am until 1.30pm (2-3 miles)
Meet main Car Park SU645214 for this chalk downland walk with good views to the South.  We will be looking for winter visitors and resident species, this is also a good spot for raptors.  Can be muddy, so good walking boots.

Sunday 15th January - Winter Birds at Farlington Marshes

Species - Migrants

Leader:  Kevin Stouse                    09.30am until 2pm (3 miles)
Meet at Broadmarsh Car Park SU699055 for this walk round the Marshes in search of Migrant birds – NB the new road layout means you have to do a U-turn to enter car park as there is no right hand turn into the car park entrance – continue up Harts Farm Way and where it widens you can turn and come back to the car park entrance.  Bring Coffee/Lunch

Wednesday 18th January - Bunny Meadows – Warsash

Possible Species - Firecrest, Treecreeper, Nuthatch, Woodpecker

Meet in the Car Park in Passage Lane SZ489062 for this walk along the coastal path looking for winter migrants we will continue into Wendleholm Nature Reserve and the broadleaved woodland of Holly Hill.

Species – Wintering Waders and Wildfowl

Meet at the layby behind the Salterns Sailing Club, Maiden Lane, Lymington SZ326940 for this walk looking at wintering waders and wildfowl.

Saturday 28th January – Breamore

Possible Species – Barn Owl

Leader Ted Barnes                     11am until 3 pm (4 miles)
Meet at SU 158182 (OS 184 – Salisbury & the Plain). Travelling from Fordingbridge towards Salisbury on the A338 and on entering Breamore village turn left where signposted Breamore House.  About 100 yards on the left hand side park in the car park next to the village hall just before the thatched cottages.  A walk through down land and woods hoping to catch a late afternoon glimpse of Barn Owls.  Bring lunch.

Possible Species – Great Crested Grebe, Goosander, Raptors

Meet in the layby on the A3057 north of the Bear and Ragged Staff pub SU335258 for this circular walk looking for Woodland and Wildfowl species.  Bring coffee/lunch.

Saturday 4th February – Lepe

Species – Waders, Farm and Woodland Birds
Leader:  Dave Munday                9am start 3 to 4 hours (4 miles)

Meet in the main Car Park SU455985 on the seafront (N.B. charges apply) for this walk through farm and woodland habitat.  We will also take time to sea watch and look for waders and gulls.  There are toilets in the Car Park.

Species – Winter Waders and Wildfowl

Meet at Warblington Church Car Park SU 728054 for this walk along the shore to Budds Farm sewage works in search of winter waders and wildfowl.

Possible Species – Great Grey Shrike

Meet in Shatterford Car Park SU348064 on the Lyndhurst to Beaulieu Road, for a circular walk to look for typical wintering birds of the New Forest.
Bring lunch and waterproof boots.

Sunday 4th March – Blashford Lakes – HWT

Species – Wintering Wildfowl and Gulls

Leader:  Simon Ingram                    09.30am until 12.30pm (2.5 miles)
Meet in the Tern Hide Car Park to the north of Ellingham Drove at SU151083.  We will visit the hides overlooking Ibsley Water and Ivy Lake, where we would hope to see wintering wildfowl, gulls and various woodland species at the popular feeding stations.  The walk is on well maintained level paths and there are toilets in the Education Centre.

Possible Species – Raptors

Meet in Warnford Village Hall Car Park SU624232 for this walk through open countryside, woodland and farmland.  We will be looking for early migrants and the local resident species.  Can be muddy, so good walking boots.  Bring lunch.

Saturday 14th April – Denny Wood – New Forest

Leader:  Jonathan Mycock                07.00am until 10am (2-3 miles)

Please meet in the Shatterford Car Park SU348064.
Join Jonathan for a gentle walk across heath and mire to Denny Wood.  Emphasis will be on identification of woodland birds by calls and song.  Early migrants e.g. Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler should be found in the woodland, with possibility of Crossbill, Hawfinch and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.  Heathland birds e.g. Woodlark, Stonechat and Dartford Warbler may also be seen.
Good walking boots or wellingtons. Bring hot or cold drinks.

Saturday 21st April – Trinley Estate, Finkley, nr Andover

Leader:  Andrew Hughes and Diane Nicolle        09.00am until 11am (2 miles)

Please meet in the farmyard at Trinley Estate SU396489 signs will show you where to park.  Car sharing would be appreciated.  Andrew Hughes, BBC Food and Farming Farmer of the Year 2011 runs a commercial farm, but fits in habitat on the estate to specifically benefit wildlife, including Grey Partridge, Lapwing, woodland birds and Dormice.  This walk will be concentrating more on the habitats created and Diane Nicolle RSPB North Wessex Farmland Bird Advisor will be on hand to relate what we see and to explain the work of conserving declining farmland bird populations in the North Wessex Downs.

Possible Species – Spring migrants including Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat

Meet SU531023 - on the shore at Hill Head opposite the Titchfield Haven entrance.  We will particularly concentrate on the birdsong of farmland and hedgerows.

Saturday 28th April – Lucy Hill – New Forest

Leader:  Dave Munday                    09.30am until 1.30pm

Meet in the Car Park SU227045 from Burley the car park is on the right, alongside Burley New Inclosure - look for arrows on road side just out of Burley on Lyndhurst Road.  We will walk the heath and woodland for a variety of New Forest bird species.
Boots a must.  Bring lunch.

Meet at Layby SU 549043 on West of Titchfield - Stubbington road (B3334).  Take the A27 through Fareham and turn left on the B3334 at the roundabout just before Titchfield village. After the glass houses continue past Crofton Farm on the right then turn right into a disused section of the road.  Bring coffee/lunch

Possible Species - Kingfisher, Water Rail, Warblers – Sedge, Reed, Blackcap

Join Roger and HOS walk leaders for this walk along the River Itchen.  Richard Carpenter and John Clark will be there to help with the identification of the birds and the birdsong of Spring.  Paths can be slippery.
