WALKS PROGRAMME

 

AUGUST 2008 - NOVEMBER 2008

 

Please note:

Strong foot wear is advisable for all of these walks, as is the appropriate clothing for the weather conditions. A packed lunch is recommended for walks that span mid-day.

 

Walk category, as follows:

 

A – Easy fairly short walks over flat ground with no or a few stiles.

B – Slightly more demanding – long distance, may have gentle slopes or hills.

C - Medium difficulty, moderate distance/moderate hills and stiles.

D – Strenuous – long distance, steep hills, many stiles.

U – Unclassified

 

Please be careful – ensure that you car is locked and valuables are stored out of sight.  Carry a telescope and tripod safely, don’t become a trip hazard. Keep away from the edge of cliffs and river banks; watch out for nettles, brambles and over hanging vegetation. Take care of barbed wire and electric fences and stiles. In warm weather guard against sunburn and dehydration.

 

Participants are required to inform the walk leader if they have any medical condition which might compromise their ability to complete the walk or they are leaving the walk early. NEW indicates a new walk. 

 

Remember that you are responsible for your own personal safety, and that you under take any HOS walk at your own risk, and that neither HOS nor the walk leader can be held responsible for any loss, damage, or personal injury arising from taking part in any walk or activity.

AUGUST 2008

Saturday 2nd August -   Blashford Lakes

Leader Steve Lankester                                     9.30 am until 1.00 pm. (3 miles)

Join us for a wander in and around the Hampshire Wildlife Trust’s Blashford Lakes Reserve, with its mixed habitat and new bird hides plus possible dragonflies and butterflies for added interest.  Meet and park at the Blashford Lakes Centre,  Ellingham Drove, near Ringwood at SU 151079 (O/S 195, Bournemouth). Walk category ‘A’

Sunday 17th August - DURLEY MILL AREA

Leader: Phil Budd                                            10:30 am until 3.30 pm (4.5 miles)

Meet in the lay-by SW of Netherhill Farm in Netherhill Lane at SU 518150 (O/S 196 Solent). This walk takes us through woodland, lanes and farmland. Possible Kingfisher, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Yellowhammer and Little Owl and butterflies. Walk category ‘B’. 

 

 SEPTEMBER 2008 

 

Sunday 7th September - Migrant Birds at Farlington Marshes

Leader: Kevin Stouse                             9.30 am until 1.30 pm (3 miles).

Meet at Broadmarsh car -park  at  SU 699055 (O/S 197 - Chichester)  for this walk round the marshes in search of migrants    Take the road south, variously marked for Broadmarsh Coastal Path, Industrial Site and Amenity Tip, and called Harts Farm Way. Take the first turn right (under a height barrier) into the car park.  Bring coffee/Lunch.  Walk category A. 

 

Saturday 13th September - Chalton and Finchdean

Leader: Darren Fry                                 10.00 am until 3.00 pm (4.5 miles)

Park in Chalton village SU 731161  (O/S 197 - Chichester ) and meet by the telephone box in the village. Some slight inclines in this walk covering an area of  farmland, scrub and  woodland.  Walk category B.

 

Sunday 14th September - Longdown and Deerleap

Leader: Phil Budd                                   10.00 am until 3.00 pm (4.5 miles)

Meet and park at the Longdown car park at SU 360087 (O/S 196 - Solent) .  Longdown and deerleap are situated in the east of the new Forest.  Bring lunch, stout footwear recommended.  Walk category A.

 

Sunday 21st September - OXEY AND NORMANDY MARSH

Leader: Andrew Walmsley                        10.30 am until 3.30 pm (4 miles)

Park by the roadside 1/3 km beyond the pub at SZ 323934 (O/S 196 - Solent) for this walk around the marsh. Late summer and early autumn can produce some really good birds along this stretch of coastline. Walk category A.

 

Saturday 27th September -  RIVER ITCHEN CIRCULAR WALK

Leader:  Nick Wiley                                10.30 am until 13.30 pm ( 3 miles)

Park in Easton village  SU 511321 (O/S 185 - Winchester) ) and meet outside Cricketers PH.   Walk along the river taking in Easton, Abbots Worthy and Martyn Worthy for possible kingfisher, grey wagtail and others. Walk category A.

 

OCTOBER 2008

 

Sunday 5th October - Migrant Birds at Titchfield Haven

Leader: Kevin Stouse                             9.30 am until 2.00 pm  (5 miles).

Meet in layby at SU 549043  (O/S 196 - Solent) on West of Titchfield to Stubbington Road (B3334) for this circular walk of the outside of the Haven reserve in search of migrants and early winter birds.  Bring coffee/Lunch.  Walk  category B.

 

Saturday 11th October - Mottisfont.

Leader: Barrie Roberts                                      10.30 am until 2.00 pm (4 miles)

Park in Mottisfont Abbey car park SU 328268  (O/S 185 Winchester).  A walk for woodland and farmland birds, with possible Marsh Tit, Kingfisher, Yellowhammer and migrants. Some hilly parts and a few stiles. Occasionally muddy.   Walk category C.

 

Sunday 12th October -       CHILLING FARM AREA INCLUDING HOOK

Leader: Dave Mundy & Ted Barnes            9.00 am until 13.30 pm  (4.5 miles).

From Holiday Inn roundabout on A27 at top of Titchfield Hill, take Warsash Road and after about ½ mile turn into Hook Lane on LHS  (this is road AFTER Common  Lane) . Meet in Hookshead  Coppice car-park. SU 524056 ( O/S 196 - Solent) This walk takes in a variety of habitats and  we would hope to see shorebirds, farm and woodland species.  Bring coffee/Lunch.  Walk  category A.

 

Saturday 18th October - havAnt Thicket

Leaders: Darren Fry                               10.00 am until 12.30 pm (2 miles)

Park in the Havant Thicket car park  at   SZ 722103 (O/S 197 - Chichester) for this short walk for woodland birds and migrant thrushes .  Walk category A.

 

Saturday 25th October - Keyhaven Marshes

Leaders: Sheila and Steve Lankester                   9.30 am until 12.30 pm (3 miles)

Meet by the sea wall at Keyhaven (free parking) or park in the car park opposite the Gun public house (charges apply)  at   SZ 306915 (O/S 196 - Solent) for this short walk for early winter wildfowl and waders along the sea wall .  Walk category A.

 NOVEMBER 2008

Saturday 15th November  - CALSHOT

Leader: Simon Curzon                                      9.00 am to 12 noon  (2 miles)

Meet at  Calshot car park  SU 480013 (O/S 196 - Solent). A walk to see what waders and wildfowl are on the mudflats. There may be ducks and grebes on the sea and there are often wintering Med. Gulls and Black Redstart in the area.  Walk Category A

 

Sunday 16th November - Hook with Warsash
Leader: Pat Skelton                               10.00 am until 3.30 pm  (5.5 miles approx)
Approaching Warsash from Brook Lane take the 3rd exit at the roundabout onto Shore Road. Follow the one way route into Passage Lane and park in the car park on the RHS before reaching the shore (where there is another car park). SZ 489062 (O/S 196  - Solent).      The habitats include inter-tidal mud, saltmarsh, scrub, reedbed and woodland.   We will return to the car park once during the walk, so it will be possible to leave early.  Walk category 'A'.

 

Sunday 23rd November - Winter Birds at Farlington Marshes

Leader: Kevin Stouse                             9.30 am until 1.30pm  (3 miles).

Meet at Broadmarsh Car Park for this walk round the Marshes in search of Winter birds  From the A27/A3M junction take the road south, variously marked for Broadmarsh Coastal Path, Industrial Site and Amenity Tip, and called Harts Farm Way. Saturday 29th November -   STANSTED FOREST

Leader: Darren Fry                                 10.00 am until 3.30 pm  (3 miles).

Meet in the main car park at Stansted Forest SU 753103 (O/S 197 - Chichester) for this walk in search of wintering woodland birds, including finches and tit flocksWalk category B
