HOS volunteers completed surveying breeding Snipe in the New Forest in 2021. In total 141 1km squares were surveyed with the result that 181 Snipe territories were found. This is an increase over the survey completed in 2014. For the 2014 survey (carried out by a private company) 80 pre-planned transects were designed to get within 100m of suitable wader habitat. For the HOS 2021 survey we asked observers to get within 50m of suitable Snipe habitat which may explain some of that increase. HOS also surveyed 9 new 1km squares not visited in the 2014 survey and found 14 territorial males/pairs in these.
